Dear all,
It's amazing how Dr. Phillips has led me into the world of human psychology and communication strategies I'll never have access to otherwise as an English Teaching graduate student. It seems he is very serious for the course although on the appearance we can hardly detect it. There are too many things to say about "influence", but I think I'll start to attack Rokeach's "Beliefs System".
I believe people's beliefs system make up their souls. That one person is different from another is not as much due to his appearance as to his beliefs. You want to influence a person, whether for non-exploitive reasons or not, you have to delve into his beliefs first. The politicians and advertisers try to influence us by trying to show or tell us whom to trust or whom not to trust, that is, the Type C beliefs. With the Type C beliefs comes the Type D beliefs- the things or words we identify with because they are from the person we trust. The Type E beliefs are confronted, I believe, almost every day by every source we come into contact with, because they are only concerned with a superficial level of the things which change with time and circumstances and it DOES NOT change who you are if you change the beliefs.
Only the Type A beliefs and Type B beliefs define who you are as a human being. Type A beliefs are most of the time in your subconscious level, for they are your psychological foundations of the world you know. For example, you knew you are the son or daughter of your parents, and the order cannot be reversed. No professional persuaders will try to change Type A beliefs. It'll never work out, they're out of their mind if they do so. But for Type B beliefs, especially the Type B- beliefs, the negative self-conceptions, are contantly being exploited by the profiteers. When you have doubts about your self-image, these are you negative self-conceptions, Type B- beliefs and they are a source either for well-meant helping professionals like teachers or for ill-intended businessmen. A finding for this would be for us teachers to help convert, influence, our students' Type B- beliefs into Type B+ beliefs, the positive self-conceptions which guide them to become more self-accepted individuals.
If we just look at the website of a loaning service( www.okbank.com.tw), and we'll know they make use of Type E and Type B- beliefs to try to market their their service. Thay say the interest rate is only 1.88% 'onwards' and you could run into twice as much debts as you loaned if you neglect their service. We should all be equipped with knowledge of influence to know how they are conducting their business, shouldn't we?
Nick
